Tai Sui and Zodiac Signs
The
Origin of Tai Sui...
When it comes to the origin of Tai Sui, we must first know
about the 60 Jia Zi, which are 60 combinations of 10 Heavenly Stems and 12
Earthly Branches. Jia is the beginning of weather while the Zi is the start of
the Earthly energy. Among the combinations are Jia Zi, Zi Chou, Ren Wu, Gui Hai
and etc. It is known in Chinese traditional belief that a deity governs a
heavenly body in the sky. Tai Sui is one of the 60 Jia Zi who takes turn to
command the earth. He is the most powerful Year Duty God of the Earthly deities. According to the legends, Tai Sui has command over all other deities except the
Jade Emperor, thus claiming great authority and power. He is a deity that no one
dares to offend.
What
is "Chong Sui" ?
When the twelve
animals are arranged in a circle based on the zodiac sequence, we will find the
Tiger (this year is the Tiger year) in a
diagonal line with the Monkey. Hence, those born under the sign of the Monkey are
conflicting with the Tai Sui (Chong Sui). Other animals that are in diagonal
line are Goat and Ox, Boar and Snake, Rooster and Rabbit, Dog and Dragon,
Horse and Rat.
What
is "Offending the Tai Sui" ?
You may have heard of the phrase "offending the Tai
Sui". This is commonly used when the animal sign of a person corresponds with
the year's animal sign. For example, the year ( 2010 ) is the year of the Tiger.
Therefore, those born under the sign of the Tiger are in conflict with the Tai Sui.
The above are some obvious cases. There are other cases that are more serious
but happen in a hidden way. For instance, if the month, date, time, Ming Gong
and luck in one's Eight Characters are conflicting with Tai Sui, it is more
difficult for one to dispel the conflicting force.
How
to pray to "Tai-Sui" ?
There are two ways of praying to the Tai Sui. One of them
is Age Praying. It takes place when
one is in conflict with the Tai Sui. They pray to the Tai Sui to prevent a
possible disaster. The other one is Age
Suppression. The traditional way to do this is to write down one's birth
date and time on a piece of gold-colored paper and place it together with 49
copper coins under the idol of the Tai Sui. It is believed that this method will
ensure a smooth year ahead. Nowadays, many temples in
Singapore and Malaysia
provide the service of installing the idol of the Tai Sui. It is best to pray
to Tai Sui between the 1st and 15th day of the 1st lunar month. If one or one's
family have encountered setbacks, e.g. couldn't recover from a long illness, not
smooth at work or meet with accidents frequently, one can seek help from an
expert at a temple to pray to Tai Sui for safety and success.
For those who don't pray to deities, what should they do if they are conflicting
with the Tai Sui ? Actually, each religion has its own way to deal with it. When
you encounter bad luck, you can seek help from your religion. If one doesn't
believe in religion, then he can accommodate himself to circumstances.
